A Note To Self for 2020

Dear Self,

You have come quite a ways – one decade after another. There have been plenty ups; all to remind me of the beauty in the world. There have been plenty of downs, all to strengthen me for the better. I am grateful for each hill and every valley.

Going forward, there is one main thing I expect and that is for us to becoming the closest we’ve ever been. I wish there to be no boundaries between us. No disconnects. No blending in at your expense. Like all relationships, I’m sure it will take time for us to reach the next levels just as it has taken time for us to arrive where we are today. I will grant you the necessary space to develop freely with compassion.

We both know that healing is spiral, time isn’t linear and life does not occur in a vacuum, therefore, patience and discipline is key. Continue to gain knowledge not just to know but to improve and to share for the knowing of others so that they may be supported on their journeys just as others have directly or indirectly supported you.

I know that you will always have purpose, even if in some moments that it is just to love and/or be loved. I recognize the grandiosity of your dreams and desires but remember that you save the world each day that you display kindness, share a positive or enlightening thought and take care of yourself in all the ways needed. You are a part of the world and therefore the world is you; as are we all.

Despite those that may cross your path and challenge you in the worst of ways, you are strong. Just recall that those people are also living in their momentary purpose and they are in your life at that time for a reason. Experience them but do not let their harshness linger on your soul and taint how you radiate who you are.

Lastly, never forget that you are divine. Even in your sadness, your anger and in the midst of your setbacks, you are magical being with the power to turn things around with the proper work. And, it is my hope that we will be so intertwined that every desire reveals itself to be pure and that every positive manifestation proves to be effortless.

I love you very much, Self. Continue to do great things.

Mote it be. Aṣẹ.

Intention Over Expectation

The common programming that takes place almost the moment we are cognizant is what we should expect out of people and situations. Helpful in many ways and often influenced by the trends of our culture and subcultures, these ideas take on a particular form that so happens to shape how we perceive the entire universe or at least our life’s journey.

While our optimism is still intact, our expectations tend to be pretty pleasant. We expect our parents to provide for us. We expect our partners to be faithful. We expect things to fall into place. We expect Earth to forever continue floating in space. Then, life continues to unfold, we fall victim to inevitable circumstances and our expectations begin to shift.

Suddenly, we begin to expect our parents’ disapproval and unfaithful lovers. We expect to fall short on achievement. Somewhere along the winding road, we might even expect the Earth, in all its vastness, to come imploding in on itself – in perfect alignment with the chaos we have to come to know as our existence. So, in spite of all the unfortunate happenstances that actually do occur, what separates the survivors from the thrivers? Intention.

Intention is about visualizing where to aim and never loosing sight of the goal, even if the target is missed. If every successful business person quit whenever things didn’t go as expected, there would be no successful businesses. If you ceased applying effort towards your goals in life every time something went wrong, although alive, it would be safe to say you would not have actually done much living.

Expectations are usually the glue that keep up stuck in unnecessarily painful situations. We expect everyone to agree with our opinion so we become enraged when they do not. We expect happiness will somehow find us when we buy something new or switch jobs. Or, we just just know our spouses will forever be true to us no matter what. This is not to say that we should not implement healthy boundaries and standards but the truth is that nothing is certain.

The older I get, the more the things I’ve always known to be true are debunked, the more I run into new opposing views and obstacles.  What I have found is that regardless of my predictions and assumptions, life does not always match up. I learned the hard way that slow and steady does not always win the race and sometimes the apple falls very far from the tree – common and often true conceptions. And although sometimes initially jarring, instead of allowing these realizations to cause upset, I embrace them as new truths to inform the “how” of my intentions.

Hard times come and go just as much as the good times. It’s what you do with each moment that makes the difference. When we hold on to what we “expect”, we will find ourselves disappointed more times than not as life was never meant to be entirely predictable. Where’s the fun in that after all? The ebbs and flows of life are what make us who we are. We can learn a lot about ourselves based on how we handle each present moment as it comes without the stronghold of expectation but rather with the tides of intention. You just might surprise yourself and end up steering your experience down the seas of the unexpected of so much more than you could have ever imagined.

Namaste.

Pink Moon 2018

The moon carries a lot of magic in its mystery. The April full moon, also known as the Pink Moon due to its appearance around the time of the first flower to bloom (the pink phlox) is bringing the spirit of renewal and cleansing into our lives right now.

Typically, full moons enhance the energy already upon us. If you are experiencing negative feelings, it will be more challenge to turn that around now. If you are feeling positive, the intensity is turned up and you may feel especially joyous.

Whatever state your in at this time, allow those feelings to be felt. They are there for a reason, perhaps for a lesson to be learned or appreciation to be had. Be mindful, however, of your behavior. Heightened energy can lead to later regrettable spontaneity.

The emergence of this full moon took place on April 29, 2018. In numerology, this date equals 8. The number 8 represents karmic value or in other words, “you reap what you sow”. Although the date has passed, the energy is still lingering. Whatever seeds you have been planting up until this point are manifesting now, be them positive or negative. But, no matter what side of the totem pole you are on, it is a good time to set your intentions going forward.

Maybe you intend to be less negative or to be more creative. Maybe you intend to bask in gratefulness going forward in your life. Maybe you plan to cut toxic people or behavior out of your space or enhance your self care routine. Whatever your goals, start meditating on them.

The Universe is listening. Namaste.
