Sunday, January 20th, brought us our first full moon of the year and it came with embellishments. Luna in Leo, was a beautiful blood red and relatively close in proximity to the earth making it a super moon at that.
Luna encouraged the lion in all of us to roar in one way or another. For some, that might have been troublesome depending on what’s going in our lives right now and how we chose to be expressive. The stars are positioning themselves in a way to push us to seek healing in the deepest places of our being so we can transcend beyond the places in which we have been stuck all this time.
I pulled a tarot with the intention of having these recent occurrences explained and gaining clarity on how to move forward. Watch the video below for to see the reading:
What challenges have you faced or are you facing since the Blood Moon?
The final full moon of the year has passed now and if you were anything like me, you went through a series of various emotions. Depending on the level of contentment with your relationships, you might have felt the need to block people out and spend quality time with yourself. Maybe you chose to be a bit exclusive while only including certain people in your energetic space – fitting for moon in Cancer.
Releasing toxic behaviors and people would have been appropriate but today’s reading might suggest focusing more closely on growing the healthy connections we do have or may gain this coming year as we go forward:
This reading has great significance for me now and may gain more relevance later on. Does this reading resonate with you?
With the end of Mercury Retrograde, we are ushered into the final moon cycle of 2018. This is an ideal time to not only reflect over the year but to look towards new possibilities with the coming new year. This new moon is in Sagittarius, calling us to take our chances as we venture out into the new and unknown.
With spiritual guidance, I ask the cards four significant questions to assist us as we progress through the month: 1. What are we leaving behind?, 2. What is the lesson from the past cycle?, What are we embracing with this new moon?, and 4. How do we go about embracing this?
What are we leaving behind?
The Prince of Swords reversed, in alignment with the Mercury retrograde’s end, we are learning to communicate more clearly and fairly. We are being to understand how and why we should think before we speak so that we may get our points across effectively. We may also be learning how to accept the messages give to us even when they do not arrive in a way that is easy for us to swallow. We have shed some of that weakness and are growing stronger mentally and emotionally.
What is the lesson from the past?
The Hanged Man reminds us that we are not in control of everything, as much as we want to be. We have learned or are learning to let things go and trust that all will work out as it should. This is a sacrifice for some of us as we often attempt to interfere for what we consider to be the greater good. However, our efforts to fall back will be rewarded with more peace in our lives. We should take notice of this sacrifice and find that it is actually a gift.
What should we be embracing with the new moon?
Queen of Wands reversed wants us to be little bit selfish in terms of satiating our desire for exploration, teaching and new ways of thinking. The darkness of new moons represent our inner shadows that can be perceived poorly or even used for less than productive matters but there is another side to this. Our shadows are still a part of who we are and embracing is the only way we can understand it and use it for our betterment. There is nothing wrong with being selfish for the right reasons. Set your goals in place to reach your dreams! It’s okay to even be a little sassy when it comes to putting your foot down about what you really want in life. Self-expression is important but be careful not to misdirect moodiness or become overly arrogant.
How do we go about embracing this?
Eight of Wands suggest that we should just go for it! We know what we want and if we’ve been working hard for it, we will start to see positive changes pretty quickly. Authenticity is key while moving forward but we mustn’t forget that consequences accompany our rawness. However, as long as our actions are aligned with our goals, like the archer should draw our bow and shoot our shot!
I am usually pretty introspective already but the current energy in the air is calling me to take a look at who I am and what I desire in terms in interrelations. Taurus moon makes it a great time to get grounded and centered. This make take a lot of discipline as our stubbornness may get in the way, however, our stubbornness may be exactly the thing to help make us clear about what we want out of life.
Venus, the brightest star in the heavens, represents beauty, magnetism, money and love. Our interrelationships are affected by the positions of this planet as it amplifies and makes us take notice of our desires be they material or personal. In its current retrograde state, meaning that it appears to be orbiting backwards in relation to the surrounding bodies, we are being forced to take a step back and look at our lives from a new perspective – especially in the areas of romance and finance. Fortunately and unfortunately, this can mean a rise of impatience as we become more clear about what we want from our partners, ourselves and the world around us.
To top it off, Uranus is making its way in opposition to Venus. Uranus is the planet of independence, spiritual growth and eccentricity. It represents innovative progression and rebellion against the status quo. As opposing positions tend to mark a time of conflict for the sake of progress, Uranus is adding to our being pushed toward seeing our situations in a new light. Upheaval is often necessary for healing and forward movement and as full moons are a time for release, we should take note of what we can change in order to make steps towards our desired future.
It is likely you have already been experiencing effects of the onsetting new moon in Virgo this month. The zodiacal Virgo is typically represented by the image of a female virgin sometimes wearing or handling plant life. As one of the three earth signs, Virgo energy encourages us to embrace nature and to get in touch with our nurturing side. Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury which is associated with how we communicate and relate to others. When harnessed successfully, Virgo energy also helps us become more mindful of how we take care of our mental and physical bodies.
Since new moons are an opportunity to make changes in our lives, it would serve us well to start building new habits to establish the life that each of us desires. Here are a few ways we can use utilize the new moon in Virgo energy for creating a healthy lifestyle:
1. BEGIN A FAST
As the Virgo zodiac corresponds with gut health and the digestive system, this would be a great time to begin a cleanse. Fasting has been scientifically proven to improve physical stamina and mental clarity. Spiritual leaders over history embarked on long meditative journies in which they limited their substance intake to strictly water, or even nothing at all. Of course, these are extreme. However, there are other cleansing diet options that are also beneficial to overall health; it’s all about what works best for you!
I have recently begun a fast myself in which I primarily consume fruits and vegetables in smoothie form. The intake of natural foods is in proper alignment with the current energy as Virgo corresponds with the earth element. I allow myself one solid meal a day along with one cup of tea or coffee and a light snack (usually a handful of almonds or celery with hummus). Just after one week, I have experienced a number of changes including more energy throughout my day, deeper meditation, and even some weight loss.
The virgin represents purity and simplicity. It is likely that all that may have accumulated with summer fun crossing over with “back-to-school” vibes, there could be some disorder and/or a sense of anxiety. This new moon may be urging you to clear out the things you no longer need in order to create space for the things you could use. Give away that 10-year-old blouse in the back of your closet that you never wear, scrapbook those photos using most of the space in your camera phone, file those receipts that you’ll need for tax session.
My husband and I purchased several pieces of art over the last few years that have been sitting around unframed until recently. I finally decided to put my foot down and find a place for them. Now that they are up, my home feels tidier and, virtually, more complete which brings me peace as I am a firm believer that my home space is a reflection of me.
3. PAY IT FORWARD
If you have considered participating in community service, now is a good time to roll up your sleeves! Get into that mindset of selflessness. This contribution can be something as huge as building a home in for those victimized by a natural disaster and feeding the homeless, or as small as treating your co-worker to lunch or giving your spouse a foot rub at the end of a long day. Like the virgin, give the best parts of yourself without expecting anything in return. Whether or not you believe in karma, you may notice it pay off for you in one way or another, be it someone returning the favor or simply a boost in how you feel about yourself. Helping others does well for your mental health!

Every time I think of Geminis, I’m reminded of an old friend I grew up with from middle school through college. In many ways he was the stereotype of having split personalities around people and issues. On one hand, he was one of the most thoughtful and caring persons I’ve known. On the other, he had a quick mind and a sharp tongue, carrying no qualms about criticizing. He was outspoken and never too tied up in his emotions about anything. Yet, he knew exactly who he was and rarely, if ever, showed fear regarding how others perceived him. He was equal parts mature and childlike, often the life of the party and always had something witty to say. I envied and respected him for these traits. Luckily for all of us, we get to take part in this energy!
The new moon is in Gemini and it is a great time to formulate new ideas and take on tasks in communication. As new moons represent new beginnings, this moon is welcoming changes in the way we communicate with our partners in business and romance; maybe even with ourselves. New ventures in media may be opportune at this time, or at least to be in the head space for proper planning. It is also a good time for safe travel – in spite of the the summer storms some of us may be experiencing regionally.
As for wellness, Gemini energy is ideal for healing the body parts we often use to communicate such as the arms, hands and the lungs. I recommend exercises by Donna Eden which helps move energy throughout the body, including the arms and hands. I also recommend a breathwork exercise, 100 Breaths to Joy by Judith Kravitz. Both of which can be found online, namely YouTube. They have been awesome additions to my regular self-care routine.
However you choose to manifest newness at this time, I wish you the best! Share your newness and suggested routines in the comment section. Namaste.
